About the Organization

London Cycle Link is a member supported non-profit dedicated to helping Londoners ride more. Through education, advocacy and community-building efforts we envision a healthy, vibrant London where it’s safe and convenient for everyone to cycle. We host events, teach cycling skills, launch campaigns and operate the Squeaky Wheel Bike Co-op to achieve our impact.

The Squeaky Wheel Bike Co-op is a DIY community bike shop providing Londoners with an accessible environment where they can learn about bicycle maintenance and cycling as a safe and sustainable means of transportation. We seek to be a hub and source of support connecting all Londoners with the resources they need to become confident, competent cyclists.

About the Role

We are looking for an energetic and curious individual interested in building our capacity to better serve our vibrant and growing community. The Bike Shop Assistant will assist the shop manager and committed volunteers in reaching our community impact and revenue goals. By educating members on how to fix their bike, coaching volunteers and selling affordable used bikes the Bike Shop Assistant fosters an empowering environment where bikes are fixed and barriers are broken.

The Bike Shop Assistant will spend most of their time working with the Bike Shop Team assisting volunteers, customers and with the shop daily operations. The Bike Shop Assistant will also help with planning and facilitating workshops and events, supporting Squeaky Wheel’s operations and building community partnerships. Each day will be a blend of these tasks, requiring both collaboration and independence.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service: greeting people as they come into the space

  • Provide basic guidance to co-op users as they work on their own bikes

  • Help with basic shop tasks, such as daily maintenance cleaning and organizing

  • Assist customers with sales, educating customers about the organization

  • Support the shop’s programs: pop-up repair and outreach tents; WTF repair nights (for women, trans, non-binary and queer identified cyclists), kids' bike camps, etc.

  • Sell used bikes, parts, and memberships

  • Keep benches stocked with appropriate tools; operate point-of-sale system

  • Collaborate with other staff to plan neighbourhood-focused events that encourage cycling

  • Capture photos / videos / stories to be shared on social media and newsletters

Qualifications

  • Beginner to intermediate bike mechanic skills and an eagerness to learn more

  • You are able, or willing to learn how, to perform basic bicycle safety checks to ensure participant’s bicycles are in working order, and will confidently provide safety instructions to all participants

  • You enjoy working with people from all walks of life, all backgrounds, and all ability levels

  • You have strong interpersonal skills

  • You can work both independently and with a small team

  • You are confident and efficient using computer programs including Gmail and Word.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with bike shops, either as a volunteer or staff member

  • Experience working for or volunteering with a non-profit organization

  • A strong understanding of and commitment to anti-oppressive values and practices

  • Digital communication skills including social media, website, and videography

  • Knowledge/interest in cycling culture and cycling advocacy

Job Specifications

  • Compensation: $15.35 /hr.

  • Hours: 30 hours/week, with some evening and weekend work required

  • Eight-week contract with anticipated start date July 4, 2022

  • All youth aged 15 to 30 years are eligible participants

  • Reports to: Bike Shop Manager
