Note: this event has been postponed from June 11.
Are you ready to go long? Randonneuring, a french word that translates roughly to "hiking", is the adopted name for the organized form of non-competitive long distance endurance cycling. In this workshop, Marc Deshaies and Fred Chagnon, two London-based members of the Randonneurs Ontario cycling club, will provide an overview of this discipline, and go over the following information.
- History and origin of the discipline: Did you know that it predates the Tour de France, and is actually connected to the origin of this event?
- Randonneuring events: The lengths of the rides, and the rules that govern them.
- Bikes and Gear: The types of bikes that work well for this type of riding, as well as what other gear is needed or recommended
- Nutrition: How to fuel before, during, and after a long ride
- Training and preparation: How to prepare to ride really really far. Hint: It's not nearly as much about physical preparedness as you'd think.
- How to get started: When's the next long ride, and how to get registered and ready.
If riding your bike all day long is fun, you're interested in an organized system and framework within which to do that on a regular basis, randonneuring is a sub-discipline you may enjoy. Or if you just want to hear some wild stories about how cyclists eat, sleep, and take care of other needs while living on their bikes for a while, this is the session for you. So, are you ready to go long?
