The City has just released an update regarding their bikeway study between downtown and Old East Village on Dundas that compromises cyclist safety in the most crucial section of the corridor - the heart of Old East. In this section of Dundas, the City recommendation calls for a bike lane in one direction only, while travelling the opposite direction (westbound) requires a deviation to Queens and then back to Dundas.
This is indirect, confusing, neglects reality (westbound cyclists will stay on Dundas without a bike lane), and represents a giant missed opportunity for creating a safe and convenient connection between two major destinations.
Although staff has made their recommendation, we believe strongly that the best thing for Old East Village, and for the city as a whole, is to ensure there are bike lanes in both directions on Dundas. Protected bike lanes have been shown to boost business, increase the number of cyclists immensely, and improve the vitality of the street.
If you feel as strongly as we do, we'd like to invite you to come to this strategizing meet-up.
